Sometimes the most ordinary can be the most beautiful. Such was the case with the inspiration for this poem about a family who were singing together one evening.
Talvolta il più quotidiano può essere la cosa più bella. Tale è stato il caso per l’ispirazione di questo poema che tratta di una famiglia che una sera cantava insieme.
Harmonies rising, faces aglow,
Mother, father, daughter,
Spanning God’s creation.
Armonie in ascesa, facce baglianti,
Stavano padre, figlia, madre,
Abbracciando tutta la creazione.
Daughter fulcrum of their song,
Within, low lighting and deep shadows.
La figlia, il fulcro del loro canto
Nella sala, luce bassa ed ombre scure
If you saw them apart
Them one, you would not imagine.
Yet they are.
And such things can be.
Se tu li avessi visti da soli,
Insieme, non li avresti mai immaginati
Eppure lo sono.
E tali cose possono esistere.
Beyond, outside their sacred space,
all is amiss
And hate and anger reign,
And our differences we can’t forget.
by Michael Curtotti
Fuori, oltre il loro spazio sacro
Tutto è ridotto a male
E regnano l’odio e il malessere
E delle nostre differenze mai ce ne scordiamo.

To Shakespeare, Othello was the most important person in the…

Italian Stories: From the Godfather to the Fortunate PilgrimThis story is written from Australia: far from Italy. Yet for me these two places will always be connected, for I was born in one and have grown up and lived in the other. It takes some making sense of - this life spread across half a globe. Somehow the neat boxes that society creates - this country here -…

It's funny, but Shakespeare is teaching me Italian storiesIt's curious to find the heart of Italy in the soul of England, but so it is. For Shakespeare put it there. For years now, I've been hunting down Italian stories, and the last thing I expected was that Shakespeare would give me the breakthrough I was looking for. The most desperate loves, the vilest deceptions, the most delightful cross-dressing…

Genes and the Intimacy of PlaceThe pictures above were made by scientists who study genes. They tell a story. Two completely different kinds of information are combined to tell it: a map of Europe from our physical world and overlaid on it, the genetic relationship of 1378 people from Europe, shown in two dimensions. The scientific paper from which the diagram comes actually looks at…
