Words take flight: for Kahlil Gibran and May Ziadeh

This poem is dedicated to Kahlil Gibran and May Ziadeh. Both their lives ended tragically. They each possessed a remarkable freedom which allowed them to cross boundaries of language and culture.

Questo poema è dedicato a Kahlil Gibran e Mayy Ziyade. Entrambe le loro vite sono finite tragicamente. Ognuno di loro aveva una libertà che dava loro la capacità di oltrepassare confini di linguaggio e di cultura.

Ziadeh was a remarkable literary figure who knew multiple languages; her poetry was influenced by both west and east. Born in Palestine, she later moved to Egypt. She began her literary career writing French poetry, and also in English and Italian. Later she devoted her life to Arabic verse and writing, including advocating the equality of women. Gibran was equally fluent in English and Arabic and wrote in both. He was born in Lebanon but with his family at the age of 12 he migrated to America. He mastered English so thoroughly, that his epic poem The Prophet has become a classic of the English language. He was prolific in his writings in Arabic.

Ziyade era uno straordinario personaggio letterario che conosceva più lingue; la sua poesia era influenzata sia dall’ovest che dall’oriente. Nata in Palestina, si è poi spostata in Egitto. Ha cominciato la sua carriera scrivendo poesie in francese, ed anche in inglese e italiano. Poi si è data alla scrittura e alla poesia araba, ed era coinvolta anche nella lotta per l’uguaglianza della donna. Gibran era fluente sia in inglese che in lingua araba e scrisse in ambedue.  Nacque in Libano ma emigrò in America con la sua famiglia quando aveva dodici anni. Ha padroneggiato l’inglese così bene, che il suo poema epico il Profeta, è diventato uno delle opere più famose della letteratura inglese. Ha anche scritto tante opere in lingua araba.

Gibran died young, from cirrhosis of the liver. It is generally believed that drinking killed him. His death in 1931, catapulted May into a collapse of her own life. She was committed to a mental institution, and although eventually released, she never recovered. She survived Gibran by ten years. They were both free spirits, who belong to a better world than the one they found.

Gibran morì presto, per cirrosi epatica. Generalmente si crede  che il bere lo abbia ucciso. La sua morte nel 1931, portò il collasso della vita di Mayy. Venne rinchiusa in un manicomio, anche se poi rilasciata, e non si è mai  ripresa. Sopravvisse a Gibran per dieci anni. Erano entrambi spiriti liberi che appartengono a un mondo migliore di quello che hanno trovato.

Words Take Flight

Le parole prendono il volo

[in memory of Kahlil Gibran and May Ziadeh]

It is not true that words cannot take flight,

Though the storms are fierce and the journey long.

Like swallows, words traverse the oceans,

Like the bottle washed ashore, they overleap the centuries.

Non è vero che le parole non possono prendere il volo,

Anche se le tempeste sono feroci e il viaggio lungo.

Come le rondini, le parole navigano sui mari,

Come la bottiglia portata sulla sponda, oltrepassano i secoli.

Gibran’s words are like that, he crossed the seas,

His thoughts, now in a thousand different scripts.

May Ziadeh loved him, but her love she never met.

She never crossed the ocean, but her words, her words

They fly upon the heavens, they plumb the ocean depths.

Così sono le parole di Gibran, lui ha navigato i mari,

I suoi pensieri, ora scritti in mille diverse scritture.

Mayy Ziyade lo amava, ma non ha mai incontrato il suo amante.

Mai ha oltrepassato l’oceano, ma le sue parole, le sue parole,

Volano sopra i cieli, e arrivano nel profondo dell’oceano.
